With a diverse educational background, Maria earned her Bachelor of Technology in Bio-Technology, followed by a Masters in Immunology & Immunogenetics from the University of Manchester and a second Masters degree in Virology from Amity University, where she graduated with distinction.

Maria’s projects reflect her deep involvement in scientific research, ranging from cloning human TTR and MC domain of Sup35 protein to studying the genetic evolution of Hemagglutinin (HA) of Pandemic Influenza A 2009 (H1N1) Virus. Complementing her scientific pursuits, she obtained a Law Degree, becoming a member of the Bar Council of Delhi.

Dr. Chitra holds an M.S. degree in Pharmacy with a specialization in Natural Products from the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER, Chandigarh). Her doctoral studies, also in the field of natural products, were completed at the same institute in 2005. Additionally, she earned her Bachelor of Pharmacy from Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Tamil Nadu, in 1999.

Not only a gold medalist in both her undergraduate and postgraduate courses, Dr. Chitra possesses an MBA degree in marketing from IGNOU and a Postgraduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Rights from the National Law School University, India. As a registered patent agent and advocate, she brings extensive experience in techno-commercial and techno-legal domains. Dr. Chitra has numerous research articles and patents to her credit, showcasing her proficiency in the isolation, characterization, and biological testing of natural products.
Her career commenced as an Assistant Manager at a pharmaceutical company in Delhi, where she excelled in managing product life cycles, project management, obtaining regulatory approvals, and negotiating successful business deals. She then transitioned to a prestigious IP law firm in Delhi, focusing on patent filing, prosecution, and oppositions.
During her tenure at the previous firm, Dr. Chitra played a pivotal role in offering strategic advice on patent portfolio development, providing opinions on patentability and freedom to operate, and handling the drafting and filing of patent applications and oppositions in India and abroad. Notably, she contributed to the team that successfully managed the first Compulsory License granted in India for the drug Sorafenib. Dr. Chitra has been involved in numerous litigations of pharmaceutical compounds in the High Court and Supreme Court of Delhi, as well as other High Courts across India.
With over 250 oppositions filed in the Indian patent office and various jurisdictions, Dr. Chitra’s expertise extends to drafting and filing hundreds of applications nationally and internationally. She has mentored and trained individuals for projects in management and intellectual property rights, regularly delivering seminars and lectures in various forums.
Specializing in advising clients in the life science sector, Dr. Chitra excels in building, managing, and developing intellectual property rights portfolios. Her accomplishments include planning and constructing IP portfolios for multiple companies and institutions, conducting “Freedom to Operate” reports, and providing techno-legal opinions. As a visiting professor at several academic institutes, she shares her knowledge and conducts workshops across India.
